DeepSeek API
DeepSeek provides high-performance language models at a very low cost — an excellent choice for users who want strong AI capabilities without a large API bill.
NOTE
DuRT uses a BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) model. Your API key is stored locally on your Mac and is never transmitted to DuRT servers.
Step 1 — Get a DeepSeek API Key
- Go to platform.deepseek.com and create an account (or sign in).
- Navigate to API Keys in the left sidebar.
- Click Create API Key, give it a name (e.g.
DuRT), and confirm. - Copy the key immediately — it cannot be retrieved after closing the dialog.
- Top up your account balance under Billing to enable API usage.
TIP
DeepSeek's pricing is very competitive. Even a small top-up will cover significant usage.
Step 2 — Add DeepSeek in DuRT
- Open DuRT and go to Settings → Services.
- Click ＋ Add Service and choose DeepSeek.
- Paste your API key into the API Key field.
- The Base URL should be set to:
https://api.deepseek.com - Select a Model (see recommendations below).
- Click Save.
NOTE
DuRT pre-fills the Base URL for DeepSeek. You only need to paste your API key and pick a model.
Model Selection
DeepSeek currently offers two main models:
deepseek-chat
A fast, capable general-purpose chat model. Ideal for:
- Summarization and editing
- Translation
- Meeting notes and transcription polish
- Everyday Q&A
This is the recommended default for most DuRT workflows.
deepseek-reasoner
A reasoning-focused model designed for step-by-step thinking. Ideal for:
- Complex analysis and multi-step reasoning
- Technical explanations
- Detailed proofreading with justification
TIP
Use deepseek-chat for fast, everyday tasks. Switch to deepseek-reasoner when you need deeper reasoning or structured analysis.

NOTE
DeepSeek is a Chinese AI company. Data sent to the API is processed on DeepSeek's servers. If data privacy is a concern, consider using a local alternative like Ollama.
